Free Keylogger for Parents FAQs

Go to a category:

1. What is a keylogger?

A keylogger is a software application or piece of hardware that monitors and records keystrokes made on a computer keyboard. The recorded keystrokes are stored in a log file that can be viewed later. Far more software keyloggers, which are installed like other software applications, are sold than hardware keyloggers. Most software keyloggers are accessed through a secret key combination and password and can operate hidden from computer users. Some can transmit their keystroke logs via email to another computer.

2. What can Free Keylogger do?

Free Keylogger can monitor keystrokes made by all users of a Windows PC, and it can run hidden from users. Free Keylogger captures keystrokes made in all computer applications, login fields, and web pages. You can access Free Keylogger and view its keystroke logs with a secret key combination and password. You can also configure Free Keylogger to email logs at recurring intervals to your email account.

3. How is the free version of Free Keylogger different from the upgraded version?

The free version of Free Keylogger is installed by default when Free Keylogger is installed. It features a pop-up dialog that appears periodically and displays the number of keystrokes logged. The free version displays the main dialog each time the computer boots and monitoring must then be started manually. Using the free version, you must email logs manually, on command. When you purchase and register a one-year license key for Free Keylogger, the program starts automatically after the computer boots and is hidden. The upgraded version can also automatically email logs at regular intervals. See the FAQs category Getting and registering a Free Keylogger license.

4. Is Free Keylogger safe to use?

Free Keylogger is safe to run on your computer. It is different from keyloggers from unknown sources that secretly install themselves on your computer. The program and its components carry a digital code signing certificate issued by COMODO (www.comodo.com) that ensures the integrity and authenticity of the software you download. The digital certificate—combined with Free Keylogger's nearly six-year history of successful sales—make HeavenWard's Valery Kuzniatsou a trusted developer. Visit us at www.hwsuite.com or check out Norton's Safe Web Report for HeavenWard at safeweb.norton.com.

Free Keylogger only records keyboard keystrokes. It never gathers or transmits personally identifiable information from your computer, unless such information is contained in an emailed log file created from keystrokes and sent to you.

Free Keylogger makes an internet connection under several conditions: to get a license key for your computer, to email logs to another computer, to open its FAQs page in your default web browser when you click the FAQs button, and to open a survey page in your default browser when you uninstall the program.

2. How do I install and run Free Keylogger if my antivirus program blocks it?

If you run an antivirus or antimalware program on your computer, the antivirus software may stop Free Keylogger from downloading, installing, or running. That happens because all antivirus programs classify keyloggers as potentially unwanted programs.

Free Keylogger is safe to use (see the FAQ Is Free Keylogger safe to use?), and you can run Free Keylogger successfully along side any popular antivirus program by adjusting your antivirus settings. The general approach is described next. The exact procedure you use will depend on the antivirus software you have. You can usually find specific instructions for your software in the software's help file, troubleshooting guide, or product website.

To download, install, or run Free Keylogger when your antivirus software is blocking any of those actions, take these steps:

Downloading.   In most cases, if your antivirus blocks downloading of Free Keylogger, you must temporarily disable internet protection and then download the installation file. In some cases, your antivirus software may allow you to create an exception for the download URL. If you disabled internet protection during downloading, be sure to restore it after the download.

Installing.   If your antivirus stops or blocks Free Keylogger's installation file from running, you usually need to disable your antivirus before running the file. In some cases, your antivirus software will allow you to create an exception that allows the file to run. If you disabled protection during installation, be sure to enable it after installation.

Running.   In most cases, if you are running an antivirus program, you must go to your antivirus settings and create an exception to allow Free Keylogger to run on your computer. If you are running Windows 7 or a later version, you should select or enter C:\ProgramData\FreeKey as the program folder the exception is for. If you are running Windows XP, you should select or enter C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FreeKey. Sometimes your antivirus will detect Free Keylogger and simply ask you if you want to allow the program to run. In either case, you should set your antivirus to allow programs in the folder to run and to remember (always apply) the setting.

When you uninstall Free Keylogger, you also delete the log files for all users. To uninstall Free Keylogger, follow these steps:

2. Click Yes. Uninstallation completes and the Free Keylogger Uninstall: Completed dialog opens.

3. Click Close. You may be asked to restart your computer to fully complete uninstallation.

If your antivirus software blocks the uninstallation process, see the FAQ How do I install and run FreeKey if my antivirus program blocks it? and follow the instructions in the “Running” section.

2. How do I configure Free Keylogger to email logs?

With a Free Keylogger paid license, you can choose how frequently to send logs. Using Free Keylogger's free version you can only send logs manually, by clicking the Send/Test button.

To configure Free Keylogger to email logs, follow these steps:

1. Why doesn't Free Keylogger start monitoring?

If you are using the free version of Free Keylogger, the program may not start logging when you click the start/stop button in the main (small) dialog. That usually happens when your computer does not have an active connection to the internet, which is necessary for using the free license.

2. What do I do if I do not receive emailed logs?

The emails with logs are sent successfully, but you do not receive them. Most probably your email service is moving the emails into your SPAM folder. If this happens, you must add HeavenWard's email address (noreply@hwsuite.com) to your contacts and report the emails as not SPAM. To report HeavenWard's emails as not SPAM when using Gmail, follow these steps:

1. Open your Gmail email.

2. Click the Spam folder.

3. Click an email from HeavenWard to open it.

4. Place your cursor over HeavenWard. The Contacts dialog appears.

5. Click Add to Contacts.

6. Click Report not spam.

3. What do I do if Free Keylogger cannot email logs to my Gmail address?

You may correctly configure Free Keylogger to email logs to a Gmail address and test your email settings by clicking the Send/Test button but then see that the test failed. In addition, Google may also send you an email saying that a sign-in attempt to your Google account was blocked. You can correct this error in two different ways, depending on whether or not you use 2-step verification to access your Google email. (To learn more about 2-step verification, visit https://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/2step/.)

If you do not use 2-step verification to access your Google email, follow these instructions:

Change your Gmail settings to allow Free Keylogger to access your account. Go to https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and log into your Google account. A Less Secure Apps page opens. Select Enable in the Access for less secure apps box. Then log out of your Google account. Test your Free Keylogger email settings again by clicking the Send/Test button.

If you do use 2-step verification to access your Google email, follow these instructions:

Visit Google's page Sign in using App Passwords instructions page at https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833 and follow the steps there for generating and using an app password. To generate an app password, you must enter a name for Free Keylogger, such as Free Keylogger, in the Select app drop-down list. Then, when your app password is generated, copy and paste it into the Password field in the Mail settings section of Free Keylogger's Settings dialog. Test your Free Keylogger email settings again by clicking the Send/Test button.
